Wasco Methodist Cemetery – Sherman County, Oregon History

Wasco Methodist Cemetery, 1965 Survey with Notes

Wasco Methodist Cemetery, owned by Wasco United Methodist Church, is located in Township 2 North, Range 17 East, in the SE corner of Section 31 northwest of Wasco. The land was conveyed in a deed dated May 10, 1881 to the Methodist Church for $1 by the Jesse Eaton family and recorded twice, 27 September 1881 in Wasco County and 11 May 1889 in Sherman County after Sherman County was formed.

“Commencing at the South West corner of Section No Thirty Two (32), 2 N, 17 E, thence North forty (40) Rods, thence East (30) Thirty rods, thence South forty (40) Rods then West (30) Thirty rods to the place of beginning. Containing seven acres and eighty Rods, said property not transferable to any person or corporation.” Government maps indicate that the cemetery currently contains 3.8 acres.

The Eaton family lived a short distance north of the cemetery where they buried two of their children in 1872 and 1874. Church cemetery records were reportedly destroyed years ago with the exception of a plot layout without text. Some of their land transactions, recorded in Wasco County Deed Books, are Grantor Jesse Eaton & wife to Grantee O.R.&N. Eaton 1889; Jesse Eaton & wife to M.E. Church Cemetery filed 1891; and Jesse Eaton & wife to Margaret Eaton 1892.

In 1965 Sherry Woods Kaseberg copied existing grave stone information & those transcriptions were published by The Genealogical Forum of Oregon, Inc. in Yesterday’s Roll Call in 1970. Notes are derived from newspaper obituaries transcribed by Chris Sanders, research by Mark Fields, census and church records, and conversations with Bea Richelderfer, Helen (White) Bruckert and Giles French, and others as noted, 1965-1970. In July 1884 he was married to Luella Taylor who, with three children, survives him, two having died in infancy.When a boy Mr. Lamborn went with the family to California, residing there until the year 1882. He, with his widowed mother and brother and sister, moved to Wasco, Sherman county, Oregon, residing a few years and moving then to Portland, Oregon. Mr. Lamborn was a man of sterling qualities, uprightness of character and honesty of purpose in all dealing with his fellow men. His one idea of life was the golden rule, to “do unto others” as they should do by him. He died believing in the Savior of men, expressing a few moments before his death a belief in his saving power. He requested that his mortal remains be laid beside his baby Charlie in the Wasco cemetery.”]

According to Elvis Rich, Walt Eaton and Theron Richelderfer, the road from Wasco ran W to both cemeteries, Methodist and Sun Rise, along the south boundaries. Over time the concrete culverts and bridges washed out, leaving the road to the Eaton / Rich place below the Methodist Cemetery, the main approach.
