[Anita (Kenny) Drake; John K. Craig’s Homestead Entry No. 5677, 5 December 1895 for N ½ SW1/4, Section 17 and N1/2, SE1/4, Section 18, T5S, R173 …Buck Hollow. He was dispossessed by the E.OR Land Co. in 1900 of the N1/2 SW1/4 Section 18, applied to exclude it from his Homestead Entry and include in lieu the S1/2 SE1/4 Section 18, granted. He moved into the one-room house with wife Hattie and 2 children. In 1900 he had a 3-room house, barn, fencing, cellar, onion house, hothouse, and irrigation ditches on 4 acres of the dispossessed 80 a. in Sec. 17. —Claims of Settlers in Sherman Co. OR, 58th US Congress; J.K. Craig raised produce in Buck Hollow 1900-1903 and was preaching in Wheeler County of the Walla Walla Methodist Circuit. He had an “excellent system of hothouse propagation,” according to the Sherman County Observer, 14 April 1899.
